About RTR HealthTech

We exist because labs lose money in places they don't measure.

RTR HealthTech is an independent laboratory operations firm based in Manchester, UK. We help laboratories, healthcare providers and research organisations understand, measure and reduce their environmental and operational impact — through Scope 3 emissions assessment, life-cycle analysis, carbon accounting and material innovation.

Sustainability outcomes come from the same work that strips out cost.

Why us

Three things that change the work.

Approach

Scientific + Practical.

Bridging academic insight with real-world implementation. Methodology defensible under audit. Operable inside an actual lab next quarter.

Team

Multi-disciplinary expertise.

Biomedical, environmental and carbon modelling, working from a single operational model — not as siloed specialists handing each other PDFs.

Outputs

Transparent & Measurable.

Data you can trust, results you can track. Every figure carries a methodology note. Every action has an owner and a saving range.

Origin

A different starting point.

Most consultancies that approach laboratories start from sustainability. They arrive with frameworks, certifications and PDFs. They produce reports that confirm what the lab already suspects — and rarely move the financials.

We start from the other end. We start from operational data: how the lab spends, procures, disposes and reports. The sustainability outcomes come from the same work, because the same inefficiencies that cost the lab margin also generate the carbon and waste.

That shift in starting point — from values to operations — is the reason RTR HealthTech exists. It's a more honest fit with how labs actually run, and it's the reason finance teams take our work seriously.

Methodology

Four operational principles.

Lab-specific.

We work only with laboratories. Our methodology is shaped by real lab workflows — consumables, plastics, autoclaves, fume hoods, contractor waste streams — not by generic ESG templates. We don't translate sustainability frameworks for labs; we built our work around lab operations from the start.

Cost-led.

Every recommendation is costed and ranked by saving size, ease of implementation and risk. The action plan reads like an operational backlog, not a strategy memo. The financial proposition leads; sustainability is the consequence.

Independent.

No supplier commissions. No kickbacks. No preferred-vendor schemes. No software resale. The recommendations we deliver work for the labs that pay us — not for the suppliers we name.

Implementable.

We don't deliver a report and leave. The audit produces a tracked action plan, with optional implementation support and Atlas-backed reporting. Recommendations have owners, timelines and saving expectations.

Engagement

How we work, in five stages.

Stage 1
Discovery Call

20 minutes, no prep, no pitch. We listen, then tell you what we'd recommend.

Stage 2
Fixed-fee proposal

Within 2 working days of the call. No retainers, no bundles, no surprises.

Stage 3
Baseline Audit

4–6 weeks, end to end. Five named outputs and a 12-month action plan.

Stage 4
Implementation

Optional, monthly cadence, scoped to milestones. We help drive the plan through.

Stage 5
Atlas reporting

Optional, ongoing. Customer and framework reports on demand against the live operational model.

"

The only party paying us is the laboratory that engages us. That is the only way the recommendations are worth anything — and the only way we are willing to operate.

— Operating principle · independence

Independence

Why our recommendations are worth what you pay for them.

We are not paid by suppliers. We do not earn commission on procurement changes we recommend. We do not run preferred-vendor schemes. We do not sell software licences or hardware. We do not take placement fees for substitution candidates.

If a recommendation we make benefits a supplier, it is because that supplier is the right answer for you, not because they are the right answer for our pipeline.

Who we are

The people behind the work.

"RTR HealthTech was set up to do this work properly: lab-specific, cost-led, independent. We come from operational and lab backgrounds, not consulting backgrounds. Our work is shaped by the operational realities we lived through before we set up the firm."

"We had engaged consultants before, but the recommendations rarely translated into action we could take. RTR's audit was structured differently. Each finding was costed and assigned to an owner, and we began work on the highest-priority items within a few weeks. The procurement and waste changes were the most material."

"Our customers had started requesting Scope 3 information and we did not have a defensible position. RTR delivered a baseline we could stand behind, alongside a reporting structure our team can maintain internally. When the next questionnaire arrived, we responded within the same week."

Where we work

Manchester-based. UK-wide. Remote-led, on-site when useful.

RTR HealthTech LLP is UK-registered, based in Manchester, working with private SME laboratories across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Most engagements are remote-led, with one optional on-site visit during the Baseline Audit. International engagements are considered case by case.

All documentation is delivered in British English. Our work aligns with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064 for emissions, and references recognised frameworks (NHS Net Zero, ISO 14001, UN SDGs, B Corp) without requiring you to be aligned with any of them to engage us.
